What Size Bulk Bag Do I Need?
Choose a bulk bag by both volume and weight. A 1 tonne rating means a 1,000 kg safe working load (SWL), not a fixed bag size or one cubic metre of material.
Common 1 tonne bulk bag dimensions
-
90 × 90 × 90 cm: calculated volume 0.729 m³ — about 0.73 m³.
-
90 × 90 × 120 cm: calculated volume 0.972 m³ — about 0.97 m³.
Our 90 × 90 × 90 cm open top bag and 90 × 90 × 120 cm open top bag both have a 1,000 kg SWL. The taller model provides more space, not a higher weight limit.
Volume = length × width × height, measured in metres. These are nominal rectangular estimates; filled shape, filling level and closure affect usable capacity.

Allow for the filled shape when planning storage space.
Choose for the material you handle
-
Waste: check item size, filled weight, sharp edges and how the bag will be emptied. Extra volume may reduce changeovers.
-
Sand and gravel: weight can become the limiting factor before the bag is full. Check actual bulk density and weigh the filled bag.
-
Firewood: allow room for irregular logs, then check weight, unloading access and ventilation needed for storage.
-
Lighter materials: loose paper and plastic offcuts may fill the available space first. A taller bag can help, subject to material and equipment compatibility.
Can a full bag exceed one tonne?
Yes. Estimated contents weight = filled volume × bulk density. For example, 0.729 m³ of a hypothetical material at 1,500 kg/m³ weighs about 1,094 kg — above a 1,000 kg SWL.
Use your material’s actual density and verify filled weight. Moisture and compaction can change the result; never fill beyond the bag’s labelled load limit.

Plan how the filled bag will be moved and unloaded.
Check the fit before ordering
Confirm the bag body dimensions, supported footprint and clearance for lifting loops and the top closure. Match the filling opening and bottom design to your equipment.
